Welding Technology
Program Overview: The courses for this pathway include Principles of Welding Technology, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, and Gas Welding Processes. Courses for welding technology include classroom and laboratory experiences that develop a variety of skills in oxy-fuel cutting and basic welding. Emphasis is placed on safety at all times. OSHA standards and guidelines endorsed by the American Welding Society (AWS) are used. Students study properties of metals, safety issues, blueprint reading, electrical principles, welding symbols, and mechanical drawing through projects and exercises. Other topics include basic electricity, power sources, electrode selection, and all aspects pertaining to equipment operation and maintenance. Students will also learn about the operation of Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG) equipment. Emphasis is placed on the basic skills necessary to comply with AWS industry standards.
Laboratory welds will be performed in basic weld joints with a variety of electrodes in the flat, horizontal and vertical positions. Tee, lap, and open groove joints will be done in all positions with solid, fluxcore, and aluminum wire.
Welding Technology Capstone: The capstone component could be continuation of training and experiences related to the welding career field including courses through Ivy Tech Community College and/or work experience and training at a partner organization.
Certifications: AWS Certification
Dual Credit - This pathway has the potential to earn dual credit with Ivy Tech: WELD 100 (3 credit hours), WELD 108 (3 credit hours), WELD 207 (3 credit hours)
